Did You Know
Akshay Tritiya (or Akha Teej) is celebrated every year by Hindus and Jains as the annual spring festival. You must be aware of the fact that buying gold on Akshay Tritiya is considered very auspicious, that’s why people tend to buy some amount of gold or the other. BUT, did you know that Akshay Tritiya is also the day when many couples tie the knot?
Here’s why...
Akshay means eternal and Tritiya means third. Since Akshay Tritiya falls on the third day of the lunar fortnight of Vaishakh, any ritual or rite performed on that day is said to bring boundless blessing and prosperity.
On this day, it is said that Kubera (God of wealth and treasurer of all deities) worshipped Goddess Laxmi who in turn gave him eternal wealth and prosperity. Thus, getting married ensures prosperity.
On this day, Goddess Madhura married God Sundaresa (an avatar of Lord Shiva). Thus, couples who get married on this day is blessed by the Gods themselves.
The Sun and the Moon are in the most radiant phase, thus making the day perfect for people with mismatched horoscopes to get married.
Gudi Padwa, Vijaya Dashmi, Kartik Shukla Pratipada and Akshaya Tritiya fall under Sade Teen Muhurat i.e. the entire day is considered auspicious and you don’t need a particular muhurat to get married because of the radiant phase of the celestial bodies.
Now you know why you see so many weddings happening on this day despite it not being the ‘wedding season’. Many brides and grooms take part in mass community marriage wherein they get married in a common mandap shared by other couples.
